Tornado-affected areas receive ERD outreach

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is reaching out to communities affected by the violent tornadoes that tore across the southern United States of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee on February 5, leaving more than 50 people dead -- the highest death toll caused by tornadoes in a 24-hour period since 1999.

The storms spawned a cluster of killer tornadoes, along with hail and heavy snow that injured at least 100 people across the five states and reduced homes, schools and businesses to rubble. "Stunned residents report unimaginable devastation in their communities," an ERD release said.

ERD has contacted several of the affected dioceses and is reaching out to others. Assessments are underway to determine critical needs. "ERD stands ready to respond, and offers prayers of support to all who are suffering as a result of the tornadoes," the release said.

To make a donation, visit ERD's website here and click on "Emergency Relief" or call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development "Emergency Relief Fund", P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
