St. Johnís Food Pantry Opens June 22, 2013

St. John's has the pleasure of hosting an emergency food pantry in partnership with Food for Lane County and Oregon Food Bank. Our pantry, aptly named St. John's Food Pantry, will be open from 9 am to noon the second and fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry is located behind St. Johnís Episcopal Church at 2537 Game Farm Road in Springfield, just 100 feet north of Harlow Road.

The culmination of a lot of hard work by many hands, this pantry is a joyful opportunity for us to serve our friends and neighbors. Our mission is simply to be good to each other while playing a dynamic role our communityís response to hunger.

Emergency food pantries are essentially local food distribution locations. Qualifying individuals and families receive approximately 20 lbs of food per household member in every box. This should provide between 3 and 5 days worth of food if not more. Emergency pantries can be accessed a total of 16 times per year or provide roughly 3 to 4 months worth of food per individual. On average individuals and families request food box assistance 3 or less times per year.

As an equal opportunity provider, emergency food boxes are available to all individuals without regard to citizenship, cultural background, ethnicity, family structure, etc. The only requirement is the individual or family fall within the program's income eligibility guidelines.

With many of our neighbors finding themselves under compensated and their income having to stretch further, the need for supplemental food becomes greater. I'm eager to see where we take our pantry and where it takes us. I have faith that with being good to each other as our guide, we will have a grand and worthwhile adventure.
