The Epiphany

The Epiphany of Christ has been celebrated in the church since the 3rd century, originating in the Eastern Church. Originally observed as the celebration of the baptism of Jesus, it was one of three principal feast days of the church (the other two being Easter and Pentecost). Introduced into the Western Church in the 4th century, the character of the observance has shifted from the baptism to the manifestation of Christ to the Gentile nations, understood through the visitation of the Magi. The Sundays following the Epiphany all have a particular focus as Jesus is revealed in the world as our Incarnate God in Christ.
